Most exotic plants causing environmental problems today were introduced accidentally, either as the result of "hitch-hiking" seeds or of "escaped" ornamental plants. There was once, however, a United States Office of Plant Introduction, which claimed to have introduced nearly , species and varieties of plants from all over the world. All of the power plants built in Puerto Rico from through that are still operating are powered by fossil fuels, mainly petroleum. The territory's first natural gas plant came online in , and the first (and only) coal plant came online in
in the United States from The United States relies on clean-burning natural gas for almost one quarter of all energy used. Natural gas has proven to be a reliable and efficient energy source that burns much cleaner than other fossil fuels. In the last 10 years, the United States produced between 85 and 90 percent of the natural gas. The Manufacturing sector comprises establishments engaged in the mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products. The assembling of component parts of manufactured products is considered manufacturing, except in cases where the activity is appropriately classified in Sector Electric power transmission and distribution (T&D) in the United States, the vital link between generating stations and customers, is in urgent need of expansion and g loads and aging equipment are stressing the system and increasing the risk of widespread blackouts. Modern society depends on reliable and economic delivery of electricity.
The chapter discusses the use of technologies for reducing air pollution emissions from stationary sources, with emphasis on the control of combustion gen-erated air pollution. Major stationary sources include utility power boilers, industrial boilers and heaters, metal smelting and processing plants, and chemical and other manufacturing plants. The largest power plants in the United States are nuclear because they have such a high capacity factor (cf), that is, the amount of electricity actually produced divided by the maximum amount. USA government is heavily involved in US nuclear energy through safety and environmental regulations, R&D funding, and setting United States energy goals. In the late s, government policy and funding decisions have encouraged the development of greater civilian nuclear capacity. Nuclear power as part of the nation's long-term energy strategy continues with the Obama administration.
